Frequently Asked Questions
Who developed the Road Safety Calculator?
The calculator was developed by the Global Road Safety Facility (GRSF), a multidonor partnership managed by the World Bank that supports efforts in low and middle-income countries to halve road traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2030. Sudeshna Mitra (Transport Specialist, World Bank), Kazuyuki Neki (Transport Analyst, World Bank), and Said Dahdah (Global Lead for Road Safety, World Bank) led the creation of the calculator, with support from others in the GRSF team.
Why and how are the interventions included in the calculator? How comprehensive is it?
Road safety is a multi-sectoral issue with various strategies for improvement. Since the Road Safety Calculator is a quantitative tool, it focuses on interventions where the effects on crash outcomes have been measured, usually through empirical before-after studies or through comparisons of crash rates for different types of roads.
The Calculator includes ten of the most common road safety intervention areas (increasing seatbelt use, improving post-crash care, etc.), making it quite comprehensive. However, there are some strategies and intervention areas (e.g. improving vehicle safety standards) that are not included in the calculator.
What is the methodology behind the calculations used in the Road Safety Calculator?
In some intervention areas within the Analysis by Intervention Area module, you will find optimal targets (e.g. 95% for helmet use rates). These optimal targets are suggested as defaults based on global good practices and standards, but are not required to be used. Users should tailor the targets to what is realistic in their local context.
Do I need to use the suggested “optimal targets”?
In some intervention areas within the Analysis by Intervention Area module, you will find optimal targets (e.g. 95% for helmet use rates). These optimal targets are suggested as defaults based on global good practices and standards, but are not required to be used. Users should tailor the targets to what is realistic in their local context.
What are the system requirements for using the Road Safety Calculator?
The Road Safety Calculator interface is designed to be compatible with desktop computers, tablets, and mobile devices. It can be used with all major internet browsers such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Safari, Mozilla Firefox, etc.
How do I contact the GRSF team with questions or feedback about the calculator?
